On Kamala <3

She made those faces for me, you know.
She smiled with her teeth and threw fire with her eyes for me.
She let the rollers set a little bit longer for me.
Used a little extra shine spray for me.
Wore a neutral lip color for me.
She did those things so that more Black and Brown girls could say “me, too” but in a different way.

We got to see the way Black women resist everyday in closed rooms when men speak softly to explain something you know. We got to see her kindness to the white woman sent there as an ally prop but like many white women who choose their own dignity before ever sacrificing themselves for a Black woman. We watched intersectionality at play last night, and Kamala came ready to put on a show and a fight.

We knew Kamala would win the fight. What I didn’t expect to see was a Black woman acting as a mirror for those who are willing to look into it, all of the maneuvering we do everyday just to debate a single point. Kamala had NO fumbles, no dropped passes, no mistakes. To wake up this morning and look at headlines that say anything other than “Maybe Kamala should be president instead” is exactly what it means to be a Black womxn in America.

My hope is that people watched and saw the ways they interrupt Black womxn. The way they gaslight them from the facts. The way they try to make us feel small because we dare to speak the truth about the ugliness of the world AND to still speak with hope and clarity about the future.

Kamala is not perfect and she doesn’t have to be. But I dare you to tell me she isn’t the most qualified to be President.
